How Introverts Can Make Friends in College

-

Introverts love spending time alone. Sometimes it can be hard to make friends due to this. Spending all your time alone or just attending classes is the farthest way an individual can make some friends in college.

As an introvert in college, people either see you as shy, quiet, antisocial or a snob. It’s rare to attend parties and if you ever do, you want to leave as early as possible, but that’s the entire point of being introverted.

An introvert is an individual who likes the calmness and serenity of his own company. They prefer lesser stimulating environments and people. And in a world that is mostly extroverted, it can be hard for us to keep up sometimes.

Although some introverts are shy, it is important to not that not all shy people are introverted and not all introverts are shy. Being shy could be one of the hindering factors of making friends and being a shy introvert even makes it worse.

Talking to people can leave you nervous and anxious. An anxious introvert might find it extremely difficult finding friends as well. But here are tips to help introverts out with making friends in college.

Join Societies on Campus

One way to truly get out there and make friends in college is by joint societies and clubs. It can be a fun way to have a group of people in your circle. And the best part is there is something for everyone so you do not have to bother about.

As an introvert you can find a society that suits you just fine and you don’t have to go out of your way to be something you’re not. Plus, you get to feel more involved in activities and make more memories in college.

Social Media Comes into Play

One thing that made it very easy for me to talk to my mates was social media. There would always be a group of some sort to keep up to date with news and that’s where you can break the ice. When you talk to them over social media, it’s easier to do so in real life.

Most introverts have no problem expressing themselves over the internet. And you can use that to your advantage. Especially just after registration, it’s easier to make friends with people in the first days of college because they too are finding where they belong.

Stay Back After Lectures

The last thing you want to do when trying to make friends in college is going home immediately classes end. There are free periods where you can take advantage of and get to know people better. So instead of going home, why not visit a café?

You can choose to walk around campus and try out other parts of it. It’d amaze you the kind of people you’d meet and most importantly, become friends with. Might seem daunting for an introvert but a worthy sacrifice.

Hang Outs Always Work

One of the best ways to know people is not usually behind the class walls. As introverts, handling a large group of people can be terrifying so why not choose smaller groups? They are also a great way to socialize.

Having night outs would not burn you out if you don’t do it often. And remember to recharge when you feel yourself begin to. It’s okay to be nervous but finding the right people makes it easier.

Let Things Happen Organically

All you can do is be friendly to people and be authentic to yourself. There’s no reason to force things so you don’t constantly feel like a thorn in the flesh. As introverts we tend to overthink things a lot.

Make a conscious effort to never be swayed and know who is truly there for you. Remember to throw a smile at people and be accommodating the best way you can. Introverts hate small talk but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to do just that.

With these tips, making friends in college would be lot easier than you think. Let us know which was the best for you.
